Sailing the dinghy

It is for moments like these that I brought a sailing dinghy.  What an opportunity it is for a child to have his or her own boat.  Sailing is intuitive on a small boat, enabling a young mind to easily learn the skills. One feels the effect of sail changes faster.  There are fewer complicated sail control systems.  Leif is at the stage that he can rig up the boat himself then land it on the beach and secure things.  He understands how to sail upwind so he can go where he chooses.  Ruby is still exploring how things work but  she certainly understands how to steer with a tiller.  And she likes to goof off in the boat.

The other day Leif was making his way back to the boat and he was pinching which means he was trying to point too high into the wind.  I was trying to coach him how to get back a little faster.  He told me he had “a plan.”  When I pointed out that his plan was not working he told me that there was one person who decided which direction his boat went and that was him.  What wonderful empowerment.
